In two more days, Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State will visit Indonesia. Approximately fifteen years ago Hillary Clinton had also visited Indonesia when accompanying her husband who was at time the US President. President Clinton’s visit at that time was one of the appreciations of the US Government of Indonesia’s success in development, and at the same time to strengthen cooperation between the two big countries. The world gave a high appreciation of the ability of the government and people of Indonesia in comprehensive and integrated development.

In the cascade of condemnations and condolences that followed the death of Indonesia's former strongman Suharto on January 27, one voice was conspicuously missing. That voice was of Dr. Haryono Suyono, the Chicago-trained sociologist who served for almost two decades as Suharto's minister of population and family welfare.

By: Prof. Haryono Suyono MA. PhD

Three days from now, on January 15th, 2009, the Damandiri Foundation will be 13 years of age. The foundation was founded by former Indonesian president HM Soeharto and has since the beginning encouraged prosperous families to give attention and side with the poor families. The foundation’s efforts have flowed endlessly in assisting poor families by placing them as the central point of development. The poor families that are usually of low educational levels were diligently encouraged to learn to save, by providing their children with schooling, a culture that is almost impossible to carry out. Example of Pak Haryono

Subiakto TjakrawerdajaBy Subiakto Tjakrawerdaya

I have known pak Haryono for a long time, since we sat together in the government of Harto, he as Chief of BKKBN and me as a Director General in the Ministry of Cooperatives.

Many of his concepts in the population field have become government programs in the era of Pak Harto and have been implemented successfully; especially the Family Planning Program. This program very successfully reduced the birth rate. There was even an expression in the media: “Remember Haryono, certainly remember FP. On the other hand, remember FP, certainly remember Haryono”. This reflects how Pak Haryono’s name sticks strongly to the success of the FP program. His activities in BKKBN (National Coordination Board for Family Planning) over more than 26 years with many innovations, has placed him as the personification of the family planning movement. It is fitting if he is given the title of father of the Indonesian Family Planning Movement.
